Siliguri, 03rd September: Police have arrested the manager and a staff member of Reliance Smart Store located on Sevoke Road, Siliguri, following the theft of lakhs of rupees in cash. The arrested individuals are Subroto Ghosh, the 34-year-old store manager, and Tapas Poddar, a 25-year-old staff member. A security guard, who is currently absconding, is also being sought by the authorities.
Reports indicate that a person dressed in a ‘burkha’ entered the store on Sunday night, hid in the storeroom, and waited until the store closed. The individual then disabled all the CCTV cameras, broke open the cash box, stole approximately Rs 4 lakh in cash along with the CCTV DVR, and hid back in the storeroom.
The next morning, as the store opened, the thief took the opportunity to leave with the stolen money and DVR. Store management reported the theft to the Bhakti Nagar police station, which led to an investigation. Following questioning, both Ghosh and Poddar were arrested.
The police have requested the court to remand the suspects to aid in resolving the theft. They are also conducting a search for the missing security guard.
