Siliguri, 07th December: The Eastern Bypass in Siliguri remains poorly lit due to a lack of adequate street lights, creating a hazardous situation for commuters. Most sections of the road are plunged into darkness, leading to frequent accidents and posing significant challenges for people travelling through the area.
According to reports, the Public Works Department (PWD) has installed street lights from the junction adjacent to the Eastern Bypass up to the check post. However, these efforts fall short as a majority of the route remains unlit. Furthermore, locals have observed that the installed lights remain switched on during the daytime.
Residents have voiced concerns over the alarming rate of accidents occurring on the bypass. Many lives have been lost, and the stretch has become a hotspot for thefts and robberies. Women, in particular, feel unsafe venturing out after dark due to the lack of proper illumination.
Locals have also pointed out that street lights have been installed primarily in commercial areas, leaving critical zones without sufficient lighting. They are urging the administration to address the issue promptly to ensure safety and prevent further mishaps.
