Alipurduar, 06th March: In a tragic incident, a Kumki elephant crushed a private company employee to death in front of high-ranking railway officials. The incident occurred on Thursday near Pillar No. 162 of the railway tracks passing through the Raja Bhatkhawa Forest area in Alipurduar district.
According to reports, N.F. Railway has started installing a technology called the Intrusion Detection System along the railway track to prevent train collisions with wild animals, especially elephants.
On Thursday, a high-level team, including the General Manager of NF Railway, arrived to inspect the installation of the new technology. To test whether the system was functioning correctly, two specially trained elephants, Jonaki and Mamta, were brought in by the State Forest Department.
As a special train began running on the track for a practical test, the sound of the train agitated Jonaki, one of the elephants standing nearby. The enraged elephant attacked Sandip Chaudhury, an employee of Bitcom company, who had come to install the new technology, leading to his death on the spot.
The General Manager of Railways and other senior officials of Alipurduar Railway Division present at the site were left stunned by the unexpected attack.
