Siliguri, 27th June: Wakil Mahato, an alleged kingpin of a human trafficking racket who detained several young women in the red light area and forced them into prostitution was arrested by the Siliguri police, on Saturday night. He was produced in Siliguri court today.
It is to recall, a few days ago, a young woman from Assam was rescued by the police from the red light area of Siliguri. She filed a case against Wakil Mahato at Siliguri police station on the charge of forcibly detaining her. An indictment was also registered against him at Bagdogra police station. Meanwhile, the accused had been absconding after the incident.
On Saturday night, the Special Operation Group (SOG) of the Police Commissionerate and the Siliguri Police arrested Wakil Mahato.
As per the information, apart from the red light area, the accused has another house in the city’s Santoshi Nagar where young girls and women are allegedly trafficked from different states and are forced into prostitution. Furthermore, the girls were kept hidden inside the house during a police raid.
