Siliguri, 14th December: An atmosphere of excruciating pain and anguish has gripped the Dakshin Palash Jamai Bazar area ever since the recovery of a 12-year-old’s body who had been missing since December 05 after she left home for her school. The 6th grader’s disfigured body was recovered from the Sukna forest yesterday evening.
It is to be noted, the girl’s family members lodged a missing complaint at the Pradhan Nagar Police Station and accused their neighbour’s son-in-law of abduction. They alleged that after she failed to return home from school, they looked everywhere for her. Later with the help of the CCTV footage of a shop in Devidanga, they learnt that Manoj Roy, son-in-law of their neighbour Pradeep Kumar Roy abducted the girl on his bike. Meanwhile, the said accused absconded after the incident.
Eight days after the kidnapping, the body of the girl was recovered from the Sukna forest area late Tuesday evening. The face of the body had been disfigured and the deceased’s mother could only identify with the help of a black thread tied around her daughter’s leg.
After the recovery of the body, enraged family members and residents wreaked havoc in the accused’s in-laws’ house last night. They protested by burning tires on the road. When the police tried to intervene, many policemen apparently sustained injuries. Later large police forces and RAF teams were deployed to bring the situation under control.
On Wednesday evening too, after the body of the girl was handed over to the family after postmortem, a large angry crowd gathered in the Jamai Bazar area and protested by burning tires. They highly condemned the role of the administration and accused of failing to catch the accused despite the evidence. The protestors demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter. In view of the commotion, the administration along with the family members cremated the victim’s body at Sahudangi after the autopsy.
