Siliguri, 05th January: The state government handed over financial assistance of 2 lakh rupees to the families of the deceased Anita Chhetri and Bonita Gurung who lost their lives in a stampede at the Kalimpong Mela ground.
It is to recall that the two women were trampled to death and five more severely injured when a stampede broke out during an event held at the Kalimpong Mela ground, on Sunday evening.
Reportedly, during the programme, a huge crowd gathered in front of the ground’s main entrance. After the gate was opened, many people fell and were trampled down, killing Anita Chhetri (46) and Banita Gurung (39) and injuring several others.
Meanwhile, following the instructions of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Kalimpong’s DM R. Vimala handed over a cheque of 2 lakh rupees to the two families. State Tourism Minister Goutam Deb and GTA Chairman Anit Thapa also visited the mourning families.
