Siliguri, 17th January: Speculation has grown following the felicitation of Arjuna Award–winning international athlete Swapna Barman by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during the foundation stone–laying ceremony of the Mahakal Mahatirtha in Siliguri.
Swapna Barman has been the subject of discussion in political circles for some time. There were earlier reports suggesting that she could be fielded as a BJP candidate in the upcoming Assembly elections. Friday’s event has added fresh interest to these discussions.
During the programme, the Chief Minister invited Swapna Barman onto the stage and felicitated her. They were also seen interacting briefly, which drew attention at the event.
Speaking to the media, Swapna Barman said the Chief Minister had blessed her and advised her to work for the welfare of society. She added that several other matters were discussed but said she would not elaborate further at present.
Amid these developments, questions are being raised over whether Swapna Barman may join the Trinamool Congress in the future.
