Siliguri, 21st June: Chopra witnessed tense situations on June 15th after shots were fired at a rally organized jointly by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM) and the Congress during the filing of nominations for the upcoming Panchayat Polls. The incident resulted in injuries to CPI (M) worker Mansoor Alam and his uncle Naimul Haque.
Sadly, today, Mansoor Alam succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Siliguri, while Naimul Haque is currently receiving treatment at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital. Initially, Mansoor was admitted to a nursing home in Shaktigarh, Siliguri, and later transferred to another nursing home in Khalpara, where he fought for his life for nearly six days.
Upon hearing the news, CPI (M)’s Darjeeling District Secretary Saman Pathak, veteran CPI(M) leader Ashok Bhattacharya, and other party supporters visited the nursing home today to meet the grieving family. It is reported that the body of the deceased will be handed over to the family after the completion of autopsy.
Dr. Sumit Kumar Khutia, the attending physician at the nursing home, disclosed that there were no bullet wounds on the head, but the other injuries sustained were severe, leading to the patient’s unstable condition. Following the death, the deceased’s relatives alleged that the main accused in the incident remained free. Meanwhile, tensions continue to persist in Chopra.
Expressing his views, veteran CPI(M) leader Ashok Bhattacharya accused the TMC of being responsible for the incident and referred to Mansoor Alam as a martyr. He emphasized that the struggle is for securing Panchayat rights across the entire state of West Bengal.
