Gajoldoba, 13th June: Continuous rainfall in the hills has caused the Teesta River in Gajoldoba to swell, prompting the opening of several lock gates. Heavy rains have lashed Sikkim over the past few days, resulting in landslides in various areas and a significant rise in the river’s water levels since Wednesday night.
Visitors to Gajoldoba observed that the Teesta barrage, which had minimal water on Wednesday, saw a rapid increase in water levels by Thursday morning. This surge is attributed to the heavy rainfall in the mountainous regions.
The memory of last year’s disastrous floods in the Teesta, caused by similar mountain rains, has left the residents of the Teesta area in a state of fear and anxiety as they brace for potential flooding this year.
