Siliguri, 30th November: A new case of an attempt to murder a woman over dowry has surfaced from the area in Siliguri. Shoaib Ali Khan, a resident of the Rubvita area of Phansidewa was married to Gulnoor Begum of Salbari two years back. Reportedly, the family members of Begum had given four lakh rupees and gold jewellery as a dowry.
Allegedly, the in-laws started physically and mentally tormenting Gulnoor Begum after a few days of marriage. Gulnoor had been living at her parent’s house for some time but on Monday evening, her brother dropped her at her in-law’s place. Allegedly her husband and in-laws attempted to burn her alive by pouring kerosene. When she called her family, her parents reached the spot and rescued her, and took her to Phansidewa Rural Hospital, from where she was referred to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital.
The relatives have demanded strict punishment for the accused. A written complaint has been lodged in this regard at Phansidewa police station. Meanwhile, the husband, father-in-law, and other family members are absconding since the incident.
