Siliguri, 16th May: In a recent development, Siliguri was found to be a hub for illegal international calls facilitated by SIM boxes. The incident came to light when authorities apprehended a young man identified as Sabbir Ali during a police raid at the Jotiakali More under the Fulbari-II Gram Panchayat near Siliguri.
As per the details received, the arrest was followed by a tip-off regarding illegal activities at a shop in the area, allegedly involved in producing counterfeit Aadhaar and voter cards. The joint operation involved the Special Operation Group, Detective Department, and New Jalpaiguri (NJP) police station. Upon raiding the premises, law enforcement recovered three SIM boxes along with several illegal materials including SIM cards, routers, and computers.
Significantly, SIM boxes are known to play a significant role in various crimes frequently. At present, the officials are investigating to ascertain Sabbir Ali’s involvement with the SIM boxes and to uncover any potential accomplices. Additionally, the case has been escalated to the Central Intelligence Bureau and the Army Intelligence Bureau for further investigation due to the usage of international SIM boxes.
