Illegal setting up of shops sparks outrage among businessmen and locals in Siliguri’s Mahabirsthan

Siliguri, 11th August: Residents and local business owners voiced their frustration over mounting parking problems, traffic gridlocks, and the alleged unauthorized establishment of shops in Siliguri’s Mahabirsthan region. Reports indicate that the community has been grappling with traffic challenges for an extended period, largely attributed to the unregulated presence of small shops along the roadsides. This situation has led to substantial delays in covering short distances, such as the route between Mahabirsthan and Siliguri Police Station.

Concerns raised by local traders and residents revolve around the suspected unlawful establishment of a particular shop driven by financial exchange. They further highlighted the issue of e-rickshaws (Totos) occupying road space throughout the day, hampering daily business operations.

Mohammad Azad, the said shop proprietor, shared that the closure of their shop due to his father’s illness had been prolonged. He added that the shop has recently resumed its operations. In response, Ward Councilor Samprita Das stated that no formal complaints had been received regarding the matter. She assured that once any concerns are officially raised, they will be duly investigated.
