Siliguri, 26th July: In a shocking incident of theft at a gold store in Venus More, a husband-wife duo executed the crime, resulting in the arrest of the wife. The accused individuals have been identified as Shivam Mallick and Priyanka Sharma Mallick (26), both residents of Laketown.
According to the complaint filed, the couple visited the gold store on Tuesday afternoon and expressed interest in several gold chains. They informed the gold trader that they would return in the evening for further shopping. True to their word, the couple revisited the shop later that evening. During their visit, while the couple was seemingly examining a gold chain worth Rs 45,000 they cleverly stole a genuine gold chain and slyly left a fake gold chain in place of the stolen item to deceive the jeweller. The store owner noticed something amiss and detained the accused woman while her husband managed to escape with the stolen gold chain.
Following the incident, the Siliguri police were promptly notified, and after thorough questioning, the accused woman was taken into custody. She was produced before the Siliguri Court, while the police are searching for the absconding husband.
Rahul Gupta, the store owner, revealed that the couple had returned in the evening and used the opportunity to replace the original gold chain with counterfeit jewellery, making away with the real gold chain valued at approximately Rs 45,000. The Siliguri Police have initiated an investigation into the matter, analyzing the CCTV footage from the shop.
