Siliguri, 09th April: A hit-and-run incident in Siliguri has sparked tension after allegations were levelled against BJYM President Sourav Sarkar. Members of the Darjeeling District Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) staged a protest outside Siliguri Police Station demanding his arrest.
According to allegations, a youth was seriously injured late Tuesday night near Jhankar More after being hit by a speeding vehicle. It has been alleged that the vehicle was being driven by Sourav Sarkar, reportedly under the influence of alcohol. The accused allegedly threatened the victim instead of offering help after the incident.
A written complaint has been lodged at Siliguri Police Station following the incident. However, with no arrest made so far, TMCP workers and supporters gathered outside the police station and staged a protest. They have demanded that the accused be arrested within 24 hours, warning of intensified agitation otherwise.
Responding to the allegations, Sourav Sarkar stated that the incident was “planned and politically motivated.” He claimed that the scooter rider lost control while attempting to overtake from the left at high speed after violating traffic rules. Sarkar further said that they assisted the injured person and arranged for medical treatment.
No response has been received from the BJP regarding the incident so far. Police have started an investigation into the matter.
