Jalpaiguri, 15th May: Elephant rampage in the Rajganj Takimari Char area created an atmosphere of panic among the locals.
It has been learned that a herd of 17 elephants rampaged in the Takimari Char area of Rajganj on Friday night. Meanwhile, as soon as daylight dawned, they took shelter in a maize farm. Upon receiving the news, the forest officials reached the spot.
The locals said that the herd of elephants destroyed several maize fields. They are living in fear as more damage may occur if the elephants do not return to the forest.
According to the forest department, the elephants entered the locality from the Katham Bari forest. In this regard, Nanigopal Sarkar from the Belakoba squad of the forest department said that it is almost impossible to chase the elephants back to the forest during the daytime.
