Silkkim, 16th June: Sikkim is facing a grave situation due to relentless heavy rains, resulting in significant challenges for the region. The overflowing water from mountain springs has posed a serious threat to traffic, creating hazardous conditions on the roads. Unfortunately, approximately 2,000 tourists who were visiting Sikkim for sightseeing found themselves trapped amidst these circumstances.
A massive landslide struck Pegong near Chungthang in Sikkim on Thursday night, leading to the sinking of a crucial road. Consequently, the authorities suspended traffic in multiple areas, including Lachung, Lachen, Yumthang, and other parts of Sikkim. An estimated 2,000 tourists are currently stranded in these popular tourist destinations.
Rescue and restoration efforts are actively underway to normalize the disrupted traffic situation. Teams are diligently working to clear debris from the National Highway to ensure the safe passage of vehicles. As a precautionary measure, permits for visiting North Sikkim were not issued to tourists on Friday, prioritizing the immediate resolution of the challenges caused by heavy rains and landslides.
