Siliguri, 12th November: In a major bust, authorities recovered smuggled gold worth crores from the pocket of a man in Siliguri. The operation was carried out by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) based on a tip-off. The accused man, Tapas Saha, was arrested on charges of illegal gold smuggling.
According to reports, Tapas Saha had been apprehended during the DRI raid in the Sitalkuchi area of Cooch Behar district. Following his arrest, he was brought to Siliguri for further questioning.
After a thorough search conducted at the DRI office in Siliguri, the officials found gold biscuits weighing 1.746 kilograms in his trouser pocket. The seized gold is estimated to be worth ₹1 crore 35 lakh 48 thousand 960.
The recovered gold had reportedly been smuggled to India from Bangladesh and was intended to be smuggled further within the country. On Tuesday, the Siliguri court ordered his judicial custody.
