Siliguri, 18th August: In a significant breakthrough, the Goa Police successfully apprehended a notorious thief, identified as Surendra Chhetri, from Siliguri. The accused hails from Kalchini, Alipurduar, and stands accused of masterminding a theft involving stolen gold jewelry and cash totaling a staggering Rs 45 lakh.
According to information, Surendra Chhetri had journeyed to Goa a few months ago in search of a job. When his efforts to secure work yielded no success, he took to criminal activities, reportedly engaging in a series of thefts. On July 29, Surendra targeted an elderly couple’s residence in Panaji, Goa, where he allegedly stole an extensive haul of gold jewelry and cash. The estimated value of the stolen items reaches around Rs 45 lakh.
After the brazen theft, the affected elderly couple promptly registered a formal complaint with the Panaji police station. Initial investigations revealed that the miscreant had covered his face, making it challenging for authorities to identify him. The police then turned to social media to aid in the pursuit of the suspect. Scrutinizing the online realm, the Goa police traced the thief’s digital footprint, leading them to the Siliguri area. Collaborating with the Pradhan Nagar police station, the Goa police succeeded in apprehending Surendra Chhetri from the Junction area of Siliguri, orchestrating his arrest last night.
Subsequently, today, the Goa police presented the arrested individual before the Siliguri court. Following this legal procedure, the accused will be transported back to Goa on transit remand.
