Garbage heap odor leaves Rajganj residents distressed, officials vow to tackle issue

Rajganj, 04th May: The residents of Ambari are distressed due to the foul smell emanating from the garbage dumped at Kharkharia Haat, also known as Ambari Haat, which is making their lives miserable. The area has been used as a dumping ground for waste accumulating from the market, causing dismay among local residents for the past few years. The area comprises many houses, shops, two high schools, and a sub-health centre.

Ambari Haat falls under the jurisdiction of the Binnaguri Gram Panchayat of Rajganj and operates under the Zila Parishad. The market is held twice a week, on Monday and Friday, and has permanent shops as well. Reportedly, businessmen from Siliguri, as well as Jalpaiguri, come to this market located in a densely populated area. However, the lack of a proper garbage disposal system is a major cause of concern. As a result, garbage is being disposed of near the market, making life miserable for local residents. In this regard, a local woman who runs a small food stall stated that customers do not come to her stall due to the foul smell, and she had to close her shop out of compulsion.

Subal Sarkar, Secretary of Ambari Vyavasayi Samithi, said that all the trash from the market has been dumped there for at least 15 years. The matter has already been reported to the administration, and the Gram Panchayat Pradhan will be informed in writing. Additionally, Deputy Pradhan of Gram Panchayat Tushar Kanti Dutta will soon hold a meeting with the management of the Haat and the officials of the Gram Panchayat to resolve the problem.
