Friend turns kidnapper in Kharibari, demands ransom of Rs 3 lakhs

Kharibari, 03rd June: A shocking incident of kidnapping under the guise of friendship emerged, where the accused demanded a ransom of Rs 3 lakhs from the victim’s family. The incident took place in Batasi, Kharibari. It was reported that on June 1, the accused, identified as Mani Barman, contacted Mrityunjay Adhikari, a resident of Cooch Behar. Later, he disappeared along with Mani.


Concerned by their inability to contact Mrityunjay, his family grew worried. Shortly after, Mani contacted Mrityunjay’s family, demanding a ransom of Rs 3 lakhs and issuing threats of harm to Mrityunjay. Troubled by the situation, Mrityunjay’s family lodged a written complaint at the Kharibari police station.

Acting upon the complaint, the police swiftly initiated an investigation, leading to the rescue of Mrityunjay from an area adjacent to Batasi market. Additionally, the authorities arrested Mani Barman in connection with the incident. Today, the accused was produced before the Siliguri Divisional Court. The police are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.
