Siliguri, 17th November: In a significant breakthrough, the cops of Matigara police station busted a gang of fraudsters involved in conning with counterfeit gold in Siliguri. Following this, five members of the gang identified as Ekdil Khan, Sanwar Ali, Zainal Ali, Jalal Ali, and Nuruz Zaman, all residents of Assam, were arrested by the police.
Earlier, in the month of October, an incident of fraud had surfaced where Malti Rani Dey, a resident of Patti Colony, under Matigara police station, became a victim. Following the incident, the woman filed a written complaint at the police station which prompted an investigation.
During the investigation, police gained information that the gang involved in luring women into buying counterfeit gold on the pretext of selling fish was from Assam.
According to reports, on Wednesday, the police team acting on a tip-off, arrived at Matigara Haat and held the five gang members. Subsequently, all five gang members were arrested and produced before the Siliguri court and were taken on a four-day police remand. At present, the police are engaged in a detailed interrogation of the accused to apprehend other accomplices of the gang.
