Foundation stone laid for Mahakal Mahatirtha in Siliguri, temple to be ready in 2-2.5 years

Siliguri, 16th January: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee laid the foundation stone of the Mahakal Mahatirtha in Siliguri on Friday evening. Following the ceremony, the temple land was handed over to the managing trust. The Chief Minister said the Mahakal Temple is expected to be completed within two to two and a half years.


The project was earlier announced by Mamata Banerjee during her visit to Darjeeling. The temple is being constructed near Chandmuni, with plans to accommodate around one lakh devotees daily. The temple complex will include a Mahakal Museum, a convention center, and residential facilities for priests.

The foundation stone ceremony was attended by state ministers, Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb, and other officials, marking a key step in the region’s religious and cultural development.
