Former Sikkim Police officer arrested for smuggling wildlife carcasses in Siliguri

Siliguri, 18th January: In a significant breakthrough, a former Sikkim police officer has been arrested for smuggling carcasses of wild animals. On Thursday, the accused was arrested from a hotel near Siliguri’s North Bengal University before smuggling. The arrested accused has been identified as Danny Bhutia, former DSP of Sikkim police, a resident of Gangtok in Sikkim.


As per details gathered, acting on a tip-off, the forest officials of Bagdogra Range launched an operation and retrieved deer musk and skin of flying squirrel. Reportedly, the estimated value of the carcasses of wild animals is around Rs 3 crore.

Upon interrogating the accused, the forest officials learned that the carcasses of the wild animals had been imported from Nepal and were planned to be transported to Delhi. In addition, the officials revealed that an individual was scheduled to arrive from Delhi at the hotel and subsequently the carcasses were to be handed over to him.
