Former student Sourabh Chowdhury has been apprehended by the Kolkata Police in relation to the untimely demise of Swapnodeep Kundu. Despite having completed his MSc in Mathematics at Jadavpur University in 2022, Chowdhury continued to reside within the university hostel and reportedly carried out the unofficial role of hostel in-charge.
It is to be noted that on August 10, a distressing incident occurred within the confines of Jadavpur University. Swapnodeep Kundu, an 18-year-old freshman hailing from Hanskhali in the Nadia district, met a tragic end by falling from the second floor of a hostel building. Swapnodeep was pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Bengali. Upon hearing a loud commotion, fellow students hastened to the location only to find Swapnodeep unclothed and lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to KPC Medical College for medical intervention, where he succumbed to his injuries at 4:30 am on Thursday. This incident occurred a mere two days after Swapnodeep moved into the boys’ hostel.
In statements provided to the authorities, Swapnodeep’s father stated that his son had called several times to his mother on Wednesday evening, expressing a desire to return home. Furthermore, during the course of investigation and interviews with fellow students, grave allegations of ragging emerged as the underlying cause of the tragic event. Certain students alleged that Swapnodeep had been subjected to demeaning treatment, including being forced to run naked on the terrace. His seniors allegedly engaged in ragging him with claims of his sexual orientation, implying that he was gay or homosexual.
Subsequent to the questioning, the authorities uncovered that Sourabh Chowdhury had acknowledged his active participation in the distressing ragging incident that led to the grievous tragedy. Chowdhury now finds himself facing charges under Section 302/34 of the Indian Penal Code and will be produced before the court on Saturday.
