Siliguri, 20th January: Illegal constructions have become a common sight in the forests of Baikunthpur. With the growing control of mafias over the forest lands illegal constructions are also on a rise. Such ways are leading to the loss of habitat for wild animals compelling them to enter urban areas. Questions are also being raised regarding the safety of animals. Keeping this in mind, today the Forest Department launched a campaign against illegal construction.
During the campaign, an illegal building was demolished with the help of JCB in the Farabari Nepali Basti area under the Dabgram range of the Baikunthpur division. Reportedly, a notice to demolish the building was given a few months ago by the Forest Department. However, the owner of the building did not pay attention, so today the forest department went ahead with the campaign and demolished the building.
During this, huge police corps and forest department personnel were present. Apart from this, the workers of the voluntary organization were also present. At the same time, in the absence of the owner, a person handling the maintenance of the building has been detained for questioning.
In this regard, Manjula Tirkey, ADFO of Baikunthpur Division said that they have taken such action after conducting the survey. Monitoring is being done at several other places. A survey is also being conducted at the same time to take legal steps against such illegal constructions.
