Siliguri, 13th April: In 2016, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC) candidate and former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia lost to CPI(M) veteran Ashok Bhattacharya in the Siliguri assembly seat. Despite this, the duo was still on good terms.
Keeping their relationship intact, Bhutia campaigned in Siliguri on Tuesday in support of his once rival and Sanjukta Morcha CPIM candidate Ashok Bhattacharya. On Tuesday afternoon, Sanjukta Morcha held a grand rally from Baghajatin Park and the duo campaigned all over the city in one car. Left leader Sujan Chakraborty and Yuva candidate Shatarup Ghosh were also present at the rally.
Stating that he once fought against Ashok Bhattacharya in the 2016 assembly elections, Bhutia said “There are very few good leaders in Bengal now who work for people. We need a leader like Ashok Bhattacharya.”
Bhattacharya also expressed happiness over Bhutia campaigning for him. “Politics must be free from corruption. Those making numerous promises to the people for the votes should fulfil them,” he added.
