Siliguri, 16th May: In a shocking revelation, food items including biryani and chowmein were found stored inside the washroom of a restaurant in Siliguri. The Darjeeling District Food Safety Department shut down the establishment on Friday following a surprise inspection.
This crackdown follows a recent incident where worms were found in biryani meat at another eatery in Siliguri. In response, the Food Safety Department has intensified inspections across the city. On Friday, a joint team comprising the Darjeeling District Food Safety Department, Municipal Corporation, Enforcement Branch, and Fire Department conducted raids in areas like Baghajatin Park and College Para.
The inspection drive began from Baghajatin Park, where multiple restaurants were checked. During the inspection, officials were stunned to discover that a restaurant was storing ready-to-serve food items like biryani and chowmein inside a toilet. The premises also showed complete disregard for hygiene, and domestic LPG cylinders were being used illegally. The restaurant was immediately ordered to shut down, and the gas cylinder was confiscated.
Officials have since issued strict instructions to all restaurants and food outlets to maintain hygiene and ensure food quality. The use of Dalda (hydrogenated cooking oil) has been completely banned. Authorities warned that strict action will be taken against any future violations, and the inspection campaign will continue in the coming days.
