Kharibari, 17th December: A major drug trafficking attempt carried out under the guise of food delivery was foiled by police in Kharibari, leading to the arrest of a youth with a huge quantity of brown sugar.
According to police sources, the accused had been working as a delivery boy for a food delivery company in Siliguri for the past few years. Taking advantage of his role, he allegedly used food delivery as a cover to carry out drug transactions.
On Tuesday night, the youth was reportedly heading towards Kharibari to exchange a large consignment of brown sugar. Acting on a tip-off, police from Kharibari police station laid a trap along the Ghoshpukur-Kharibari state highway in the Dumuria area.
As the suspect entered the area, police detained him and conducted a search. During the search, around 1 kg and 18 grams of brown sugar was recovered from the food delivery box in his possession, following which he was arrested.
The arrested youth has been identified as Sujit Hajra, a resident of Gangarampur in Dakshin Dinajpur district.
He was produced before the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court on Wednesday. Police are continuing further investigation into the matter.
