Flooded fields destroy 5 bighas of potato crop, farmers face heavy losses in Rajganj

Rajganj, 16th March: Potato farmers in Rajganj are facing significant losses after water inundated their fields, destroying nearly 5 bighas of crop. The incident occurred in the North Bengal Farm area of Shikarpur Gram Panchayat in Rajganj block.

According to reports, rainwater from the past two days and overflow from an irrigation canal entered the potato fields of farmers Bapi Das and Niranjan Das. Water accumulated up to knee level, causing the potatoes to rot and the crop to be completely ruined.

The affected farmers said they had cultivated the potatoes about three months ago using loans from banks and moneylenders. The yield had been promising this year, but the recent flooding destroyed the entire harvest.

Farmers also highlighted that the prolonged waterlogging led to rotting, adding to the problem of falling potato prices in the market. They are worried about repaying their loans and the financial impact on their families.

The affected farmers have appealed to the administration for compensation and a permanent solution to prevent such incidents in the future.
