Fish market in Siliguri’s Regulated Market closed for 7 days, area under strict police surveillance

Siliguri, 12th June: Two COVID-19 deaths were reported from North Bengal Medical College-Hospital on Thursday. Out of the two deceased, one is a resident of the Champasari area who worked as a fishmonger in Siliguri’s Regulated Market.

In view of this, Darjeeling District Magistrate S. Ponnambalam, on Thursday, announced that the fish market of Siliguri’s Regulated Market will be shut down for 7 days as a containment measure.

As soon as the decision was made, strict police surveillance has been launched on the market premises starting Friday morning. Barricades have also been put up around all the roads entering the area. Besides, the process of sanitization is also said to commence in the market today.

It is to recall, the SDO, DCP and other police officials inspected the fish market as well as the fruit market a few days ago, after the fishmonger tested positive for COVID-19. All traders had been urged to maintain social distance. However, the officials eventually decided to close the fish market after holding a meeting with the traders.
