Siliguri, 01st February: Panic gripped after a massive fire broke out at the godown of a reputed sweet shop in Siliguri early Sunday morning.
According to sources, smoke and flames were first noticed around 5:00 am when fire suddenly erupted from inside the godown and quickly spread, taking a severe form within minutes.
On receiving the information, multiple fire tenders rushed to the spot and battled the blaze for a long time before bringing it under control. However, a large quantity of sweets and other stored materials inside the godown were completely gutted in the fire.
Fortunately, no one was present inside the godown at the time of the incident, and no casualties have been reported. The extent of financial loss is believed to be substantial.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, though preliminary investigation suggests that a short circuit may have triggered the blaze.
Fire department officials and police have launched a detailed probe into the incident.
