Farmers block national highway over removal of wholesale market in Kharibari’s Batasi

Kharibari, 24th June: Angry traders and farmers staged a protest by blocking the national highway to express their dissatisfaction over the removal of the historic wholesale market from Batasi in Kharibari. The move comes due to a lack of space for wholesale markets. Today, enraged farmers threw vegetables onto National Highway-327, causing a roadblock in protest. Consequently, traffic congestion ensued.

Upon receiving the news, the police and traffic police from Kharibari police station promptly arrived at the scene. After about two hours, the farmers agreed to remove the blockade from the road following assurances from the administration. The farmers explained that since the wholesale market operates only two days a week, they were unable to sell their crops on that particular day. Despite holding an administrative meeting to address the issue, a satisfactory solution has yet to be reached.

The farmers have appealed to the administration to permit the establishment of wholesale markets in the area for two days, thus resolving their predicament.
