Siliguri, 09th November: In a significant breakthrough, a racket involved in making fake Aadhaar cards on the Indo-Nepal border has been busted in a police raid, leading to the arrest of one individual, identified as Sonai Sarkar.
Reports indicate that a business was operating to create fake Aadhaar cards for Nepali citizens in exchange for money. Acting on a tip-off, officers from the Kharibari police station, led by Naxalbari SDPO Neha Jain, raided an online center in Badra Jote, Batasi in Kharibari. During the raid, the police recovered three Aadhaar cards and several documents, along with computers, hard drives, and printers.
Sonai Sarkar was subsequently arrested and presented before the Siliguri court on Saturday. According to police sources, Sarkar had previously been arrested on October 2, 2023, for creating an Indian identity card for a Bangladeshi national in Phansidewa.
In a press conference, SDPO Neha Jain disclosed that the raid was based on confidential information. Some Nepali citizens were allegedly at the center to collect fake Aadhaar cards made in exchange for sums between 10,000 and 20,000 rupees. It is believed these fake IDs were primarily used to facilitate border crossing.
The SDPO also advised Bangladeshi and Nepali citizens to be cautious and avoid falling victim to such scams. The police plan to take Sarkar on remand to investigate others potentially involved in the operation.
