Siliguri, 26th May: An elderly woman sustained serious injuries after being attacked by an elephant in the Farabari Nepali Basti area on Sunday night.
According to reports, the elephant had entered the locality from the nearby forest in search of food. The incident occurred when the woman was outside her home and was unable to notice the elephant in the darkness. The animal suddenly attacked, leaving her badly injured.
Locals rushed to the scene upon hearing her screams and promptly rescued her. She was taken to Siliguri District Hospital for treatment.
Residents claimed that such incidents have become frequent, as elephants often stray into the area. They also alleged that the forest department fails to respond during night-time emergencies.
