Elderly woman killed in wild elephant attack in Panitanki

Siliguri, 15th October: A tragic incident unfolded at Quarter area near Tukriajhar forest adjacent to Panitanki in Kharibari, where an elderly woman lost her life in an elephant attack. The deceased has been identified as Louk Maya Basnet (64), a resident of Uttar Ramdhan Jote.


According to reports, on Sunday morning, the elderly woman and her husband arrived at Tukriajhar forest to collect fodder for the cattle when they were chased by a wild elephant. During this, the elderly woman’s husband managed to escape. However, the woman was severely injured in the attack.

Promptly, the woman was rescued and rushed to the Naxalbari Hospital. Later, she was referred to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH). However, the medical professionals declared her dead upon arrival.


Upon receiving the news, the officials of the Kharibari Panitanki Outpost, Tukriajhar Forest Department personnel, Siliguri Mahakuma Forest and Land Officer Kishori Mohan Singh promptly arrived at the spot. In regard to the tragedy, Kishori Mohan Singh has assured of assistance from the government.
