Siliguri, 17th May: 70-year-old Jayanta Chowdhury, a resident of the Milan Pally area in Ward No. 25 of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC), has accused promoter Mohit Bhakat of embezzling crores of rupees. Jayanta has approached both the Police Commissionerate and Siliguri police station, but claims justice has yet to be served. Consequently, the elderly is seeking intervention from Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb.
Jayanta Chowdhury alleges that his poor financial condition, exacerbated by illness, led his neighbor Mohit Bhakat to propose building an apartment on his 10 Kathas of land. In return, Bhakat offered to provide Jayata a shop of 1800 square feet, four flats of 900 square feet each, and two crores in cash. The proposal was accepted by the elderly.
However, Jayanta Chowdhury claimed that promoter Mohit took advantage of his illness, made an agreement without his knowledge, and had him sign misleading documents, thereby transferring the land to Mohit’s name.
Reportedly, Jayanta Chowdhury accused Mohit of cheating him under the guise of constructing an apartment. Despite lodging complaints with the police, no action has been taken, prompting Jayanta to seek the mayor’s help. He has expressed that if the matter remains unresolved, he may be forced to consider suicide.
In response, promoter Mohit Bhakat has dismissed the allegations as baseless. He asserts that the agreement was made with Jayanta Chowdhury’s consent four years ago, and substantial payments have already been made to Jayanta. Mohit Bhakat further maintained that no fraud has been committed.
