DYFI’s Uttar Kanya Abhiyan takes a violent turn, police resort to firing tear gas

Siliguri, 13th April: DYFI’s Uttar Kanya Abhiyan turned violent after a clash broke out between the protestors and police, on Thursday. As things escalated, the police force was allegedly pelted with stones, to which they retaliated by firing rounds of tear gas at the protestors. A number of DYFI leaders were also detained.


Reportedly, in the midst of rising cases of corruption, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) called for a march towards Uttar Kanya in support of several demands on their agenda, including filling vacant posts and having a clean recruitment system. Headed by DYFI State Secretary Minakshi Mukherjee, several leaders and thousands of activists participated in the rally. 

Marching ahead, as the rally approached Tinbatti More, police intervened and blocked the march with barricades. This turned the situation hostile and a clash broke out between the two sides. Situation escalated when the protestors allegedly resorted to stone pelting. Eventually, to bring the situation under control, the police fired several rounds of tear gas.
