Drug trade peaks in Siliguri during winter, 3 arrested with brown sugar

Siliguri, 06th December: In a recent development, the police from Bhakti Nagar and Pradhan Nagar Police Stations, in collaboration with the Special Operations Group (SOG), have arrested three on drug trafficking charges. The accused have been identified as Anto Das, a resident of Patiram Jote in Matigara, Nur Alam Momin, and Safiqul Islam, from Kaliachak in Malda.


According to police sources, the two individuals from Kaliachak had arrived at the Mahananda Bridge area in Ward No. 03 on Thursday evening to deliver the brown sugar. Acting on a tip-off, the SOG, along with Pradhan Nagar police, conducted an operation and found the two suspects near a school. Upon searching them, 500 grams of brown sugar was recovered. During interrogation, they revealed that another individual was coming to collect the contraband.

The police waited for the receiver, who arrived shortly afterward on a scooter to pick up the drug. All three accused have been successfully captured and presented in court on Friday. Meanwhile, the case is under further investigation.


The drug market in Siliguri has become active with the onset of winter. Several attempts at drug trafficking are being thwarted due to the vigilance and promptness of the police. Earlier, on Wednesday, the Bhakti Nagar police, along with the SOG, conducted an operation and arrested a drug trafficker with 1.3 kilograms of brown sugar. The seized brown sugar is valued at around ₹50 lakh. The officials also seized the scooter that was involved in the illegal activity.
