Siliguri, 14th November: The NJP GRP and SOG team have busted a gang that allegedly drugged train passengers and looted their belongings, arresting the mastermind, Mofijuddin, a resident of Dhubri district.
According to officials, the accused and his gang used to board trains posing as passengers, engage co-travellers in conversation to gain trust, and later offer food laced with intoxicants to render them unconscious before fleeing with valuables.
The gang was reportedly active on trains operating along the Assam-Kolkata route. A few days ago, a Siliguri-based doctor also fell victim to the gang while returning from Kolkata. After consuming biscuits given by the accused, he lost consciousness and was robbed of his belongings and cash. Following the doctor’s written complaint, the NJP GRP and SOG launched an intensive investigation.
Acting on a tip-off, a joint team apprehended Mofijuddin from NJP railway station while he was allegedly scouting for his next target. Police have registered a case and produced him before the Jalpaiguri court.
Investigators are now interrogating the accused to trace other gang members and recover stolen items. The NJP GRP continues to probe the case.
