Drivers’ strike against alleged police harassment threatens chicken price hike in Siliguri

Siliguri, 18th July: Drivers and co-drivers involved in the transportation of chicken have announced a statewide strike starting Thursday to protest against alleged police harassment and the beating of drivers. This indefinite strike is expected to lead to an increase in the prices of chicken and eggs.

Reportedly, while Siliguri has not yet been affected, chicken sellers and drivers in the city and surrounding districts have reported similar complaints of police harassment. They allege that vehicles transporting chicken are being stopped, and money is demanded despite the vehicles having correct documentation.

Notably, if the strike continues, Siliguri may soon experience a price hike in chicken meat. Currently, whole chicken is being sold at Rs 150 per kg, and cut chicken meat at Rs 240 per kg. These prices are anticipated to rise significantly in the coming days.
