Siliguri, 26th November: A sand-laden pickup was seized, and its driver, identified as Vijay Roy, was arrested during a late-night police operation at Don Bosco More in Siliguri. The arrest comes as part of intensified efforts to curb illegal sand mining in the region.
Illegal sand extraction continues to pose a severe threat to the existence of rivers and results in substantial losses in government revenue. Despite directives from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to crack down on such activities, mining operations persist under the cover of darkness.
Reportedly, the operation was conducted by the Bhakti Nagar Police Station team following the Chief Minister’s recent call for stricter measures against illegal river mining. The police registered a case against Vijay Roy for illegally exploiting river resources, and he was presented in the Jalpaiguri court on Tuesday.
