Driver allegedly assaulted and vehicle vandalized for refusing to pay ‘Dadagiri Tax’ in Siliguri, two arrested

Siliguri, 05th February: Two individuals have been arrested for allegedly assaulting a driver and vandalizing his vehicle after he refused to pay the so-called ‘Dadagiri Tax’. The incident took place in the Devidanga area under Pradhan Nagar police station of Siliguri. The arrested accusers have been identified as Jiten Prasad and Shekhar Jha.


Reports suggest that drivers in the Devidanga area have been facing harassment in the name of ‘Dadagiri Tax’ for some time. If drivers resisted or protested, their vehicles were damaged, and they were beaten. On Wednesday morning, the situation repeated itself when vehicles were stopped, and the tax was being collected. When one driver refused to pay, he was assaulted, and his vehicle was vandalized.

Following the incident, the driver filed a complaint at Pradhan Nagar police station. Based on the complaint, an investigation was initiated, leading to the arrest of the two accused.


Police sources revealed that Jiten Prasad has a history of prior arrests in assault and other criminal cases. Both accused were presented in Siliguri court on Wednesday, and the police are continuing their investigation.
