Siliguri, 14th December: The DRI Siliguri unit successfully thwarted a gold smuggling attempt and arrested two individuals with gold worth crores. The arrested suspects are Mahesh Chaudhary and Jeth Mohan Bosak, both residents of Kishanganj, Bihar.
According to information received, the smugglers had planned to transport gold from the Indo-Bangladesh border to Bihar via Siliguri and Cooch Behar. The gold was handed over to Chaudhary and Bosak in Cooch Behar, who then concealed it in a specially made chamber within the car’s air filter.
Acting on a tip-off, the DRI Siliguri unit launched a special operation and intercepted the smugglers’ car near the Husludanga toll plaza, located on National Highway 27 in Jalpaiguri district. A thorough search led to the recovery of 13 pieces of gold biscuits from the hidden chamber in the car.
When questioned, Chaudhary and Bosak were unable to provide any valid documents related to the gold, leading to their arrest.
DRI advocate Ratan Banik confirmed that the operation, conducted on Friday, resulted in the recovery of more than 1 kg of foreign gold, valued at over 1 crore 18 lakh rupees.
Both accused were presented in Siliguri court on Saturday, where after hearing arguments from both sides, the judge remanded them to judicial custody for three days. A further hearing has been scheduled for Monday.
