Siliguri, 17th July: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Siliguri Unit has successfully foiled a gold smuggling attempt, arresting Jahangir Pramanik, a resident of Dinhata, with foreign gold worth lakhs of rupees.
Acting on a tip-off, the DRI team launched an operation in Dinhata on Tuesday. During the operation, a suspicious bike was stopped and searched, leading to the discovery of 10 pieces of gold biscuits hidden in the bike’s trunk. Pramanik was unable to provide valid documentation for the gold and was arrested on charges of smuggling.
The accused was produced in Siliguri court on Wednesday. According to DRI sources, the 10 pieces of foreign gold biscuits weigh 1 kg 194 grams and have an estimated market value of approximately 87 lakh 59 thousand rupees. The DRI is conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.
