DRI seized gold worth Rs 17.51 Crores in Siliguri, arrests four persons

Siliguri, 03rd October: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in one of the largest seizures of gold in recent times, foiled the plan of smugglers by intercepting 33 kgs of gold from a truck. The value of the seized items is estimated to be Rs 17.51 crores. Four people have been arrested in connection with the incident.


The intelligence agency received information regarding the large quantity of foreign gold being smuggled from Myanmar through the border in Manipur and was supposed to be delivered in Rajasthan. However, the DRI detained the alleged truck on Friday morning at about 8 am in Siliguri. 

The team arrested four people after recovering 202 pieces of gold hidden inside their luggage. The arrested are said to be residents of Rajasthan. The total weight of the seized gold is 33.532 kgs valued at Rs.17,51,17,168.


A case under Section 104 of the Customs Act has been filed against the four accused. They are liable for punishment under Section 135 of the Act which could lead to imprisonment of up to seven years in jail. Further investigation is underway.
