Doctors of NBMCH save woman after thin wire found inside throat

Siliguri, 17th August: A remarkable and uncommon incident came to light after a woman unknowingly ingested an iron wire while consuming puffed rice mixed with meat broth. Swift medical intervention at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) ensured the successful removal of the foreign object through surgery. The woman has been identified as Aklami Khatoon (55), a resident of Lakshmipur in Chopra.

Over the course of a few days, Aklami began experiencing an unsettling sensation in her throat. Mid-meal, she became aware that an object had inadvertently entered her throat. Despite attempting to alleviate the issue by consuming solid foods at home, the problem persisted. She initially visited Islampur Hospital for treatment but was subsequently referred to NBMCH due to the complexity of her case. Following comprehensive examinations, the doctors at the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) department identified the presence of a slender wire within her throat and determined that surgical intervention was necessary.

Concerned about her well-being, she sought medical assistance and underwent a surgical procedure at NBMCH. On Thursday, Aklami underwent a one-hour surgery to remove the slender wire. Post-surgery, her condition remained stable. Dr. Radheshyam Mahato, the Head of the ENT department, revealed that the metal wire posed a significant risk in her throat. Had it not been promptly extracted, it could have led to life-threatening consequences in the future.
