Dhupguri, 15th February: The report of a one-and-a-half-year-old girl who allegedly went blind after taking the Polio vaccine is causing a stir. As per the report, the family of the child has sought help from the Health Department. The news surfaced from the Kerani Para area in Duramari under the Dhupguri block.
Family members alleged that on February 5, they took their child, Dipanwita Roy, to the Primary Health Center to take the Polio vaccine. During this, two injections were injected in each of Dipanwita’s hands. Ten minutes later, the baby was given another injection in her leg. Shortly afterward, Dipanwita’s eyes started turning pink. By night, both of her eyes turned deep red. The next day the child was taken to the Birpara State General Hospital where the doctors referred her to the North Bengal Medical College-Hospital.
After two days of treatment, it seemed like Dipanwita lost her eyesight. She was then taken to Nepal for better treatment. But, unfortunately, the doctors in Nepal stated that it was too late for treatment and Dipanwita’s vision could not be restored.
Ever since the incident, the child’s mother Puspita Roy Basunia and father Divyendu Roy have been very troubled. They stated that the doctors have advised them to take Dipanwita to Hyderabad or Kathmandu in Nepal for further treatment within two days. But due to their financial crisis, Dipanwita’s parents are not being able to provide her with the treatment she needs. The family has sought help from the Health Department regarding the incident. According to them, the Health Department officials have asked them to file a written complaint.
