Siliguri, 14th October: On the significant day of Mahalaya, Deputy Mayor Ranjan Sarkar practiced ‘tarpan’ at the Lal Mohan Moulik Niranjan Ghat of Siliguri. In addition, he visited the historic Kumartuli and painted the eyes (Chokhudaan) of the idol of Goddess Durga.
According to reports, the annual day of Mahalaya holds a religious and spiritual significance as people gather at ghats and offer obeisance to their forefathers. Like every year, people were seen collectively performing the customary ritual at the Lal Mohan Moulik Niranjan Ghat. Similarly, Deputy Mayor Ranjan Sarkar practiced ‘tarpan’ at the ghat and later departed for Kumartuli.
