Siliguri, 31st August: Lakhs of people gathered at Shaheed Minar Maidan in Kolkata on this day 31st August 1959 demanding the removal of the Food Minister in response to the food crisis. But, the peaceful gathering faced an unfortunate incident while heading towards Mahakaran Bhavan in Kolkata as the crowd was lathi-charged injuring many. Numerous people even lost their lives during this.
Since then this day is observed as Martyrs Day by CPIM. Today Martyr’s Day was observed by CPM all over the state as well as in Siliguri. CPM leaders Ashok Bhattacharya, Jibesh Sarkar, Saman Pathak, Shardindu Chakraborty, and other leaders laid wreaths on the altar of the martyr.
