Siliguri, 28th June: The Councilors of the Communist Party Of India (Marxist) (CPIM), on Wednesday, staged a walkout during the board meeting of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC). The incident surfaced following a dispute with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) during the meeting.
According to reports, CPI (M) Councilor of SMC’s ward no. 19, Mousami Hazra, presented a proposal in the board meeting, with regard to maternity leave for Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) workers. Following this, SMC Mayor Goutam Deb and Chairman Pratul Chakraborty stated that the decision regarding the proposal is of the State government. They added that the Municipal Corporation has no role in the decision-making.
Subsequently, the CPI (M) councilors expressed anger regarding the role of the Municipal Corporation. During this, CPI(M) Councilors and Trinamool Councilors engaged in a dispute. According to sources, today, during the board meeting, the opposition parties also raised questions regarding the problem of illegal construction and drinking water in Siliguri.
